Industrial Arts:

The Industrial Arts Faculty Presents the Following Courses:

  • Yrs 7 & 8 Technology Mandatory

In this subject students learn about the Design Process using various Technologies such as Graphics, Metal, Plastic, Timber and Composite Materials in a range of context areas. They learn about safely using tools, machines and processes to create quality solutions to Design Challenges.

  • Yrs 8, 9 and 10 Industrial Technology

In this area we offer Timber, Metals and Graphics where students learn to safely use these Technologies to create quality items. They culminate their experiences in Yr 10 with a Personal Project where they put the skills they have acquired in Yrs 8 & 9 to good use.

  • Yrs 11 & 12 Industrial Technology Automotive, Metal and Engineering and Timber Products and Furniture Technologies

The choice of which course is presented depends on the number of students that select the options above. We have had fantastic success with Automotive Technologies in the past few years thanks to the expertise of 2 very proficient Teachers who have Automotive trade backgrounds.

  • Design and Technology

Provides students with the opportunity for, after learning about the Design Process in the Preliminary Year, creating a Major Project (MP) from a System, Product or Environment context area using their chosen personal interests. Be it Architectural Model Making, Textiles Dress Making, Engineering, practically any avenue they wish to explore can be used by students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the Design Process in the construction of the MP.

  • VET Metals and Engineering

With our new Trade Training Centre we provide the opportunity for students to acquire metal working skills in a fully functioning light industrial workshop that is equipped for most metal fabrication and small parts machining. Certificate 1 in Metals and Engineering is currently on offer and the students gain a sound understanding of a vocation in the metal industry.  

Computing Studies:

Computing Studies at James Fallon HS is part of the Technical and Applied Studies (TAS) faculty. As such, we are involved with the mandatory Information and Communications course for year 7 as well as elective course work in years 8 to 10 (Information and Software Technology). Our senior students study Information Processes and Technology.

Though a small part of the TAS faculty, our students enter and have regularly produced above State average scores in University run computing skills tests as well as in the HSC.

As a school, we are well-resourced with four up to date computer laboratories licensed with software that allows our students the flexibility for individual learning and project work and ably caters for the needs of each student.

Year  7 & 8:

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in Technology (Mandatory)

The ICT skills learnt in Technology Mandatory assist students’ to meet the syllabus requirements and address the learning outcomes in an enjoyable learning environment. We are also providing students’ with skills that will enhance the presentation of projects’ in both the junior and senior years and be beneficial for all word processing. CAD, an integral component of 3 D printing, has been incorporated into the production of Technology projects, and have further enhanced student learning to include modern practices in the computing industry. The school is equipped with 3 D Printers and expert staff always happy to share their knowledge with students’ who are eager to learn.

Years 8 – 10 Course:

Information and Software Technology (IST)

The aim of the IST in Years 8–10 is to develop students’ knowledge and understanding, confidence and creativity in analysing, designing, developing and evaluating information and software technology solutions. This elective course (100 hours in year 8 and 200 hours in Years 9&10) builds on the basic computer literacy as well as the skills and knowledge learned in earlier years. It is a course that caters for all student levels, with a great deal of both individual and group work involved. Using a Project based approach, this course quickly teaches students to become independent learners – and to make effective use of computer technology in solving problems. Leggo Robotics has been programmed into the curriculum and caters to students’ interest and embellishes the relevance of computer programming.

There are no prerequisites for either of these courses, but it is assumed that students have basic computer literacy – and an interest in and a desire to  learn more about all things to do with computing.

Years 11-12:

Information Processes and Technology (IPT)

The stage 6 IPT course, teaches students about information-based systems. It covers the processes of collecting, organising, analysing, storing and retrieving, processing, transmitting and receiving, and displaying, as well as the technologies that support them. With this background, students will be well placed to adapt to new technologies as they emerge.

Vocational Education & Training (VET)

Information Digital Media and Technology is a vocational subject that offers the opportunity for students’ to achieve a Statement of Attainment, or, work towards Certificate 3 and a career in the vast and ever changing world of computing, while at school. This qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent in a wide range of general information and communications technology (ICT) technical functions and to achieve a degree of self-sufficiency as an advanced ICT user. Persons working at this level will support information technology activities in the workplace across a wide range of ICT areas, including technical support, network administration, web technologies, software applications and digital media technologies. There is a 70 hour Work Placement (WP), as with most VET courses and the demanding workload of the School Computer Technician offers the students on WP in Year 12 the ability to meet RTO requirements in a familiar and friendly setting.

Home Science:

Food Technology:

This is a popular subject at James Fallon and students and we pride ourselves in the variety of skills and opportunities that are afforded to our students in both theory and practical areas.

In years 8, 9 and 10 students regularly submit various products to the Albury Show. These have ranged from basic scones and cookies to creative and decorated cakes and plaques. Our students have won considerable accolades for their cake decorating skills.

Students in Year 7 and 8 undertake the Technology Mandatory course. The aim of this course is to design, produce and evaluate quality solutions that respond to identified opportunities and needs. Students may study Textile Technology and Food Technology and experiment with a kitchen garden context area.

Hospitality & Retail Services:

This is a Vocational Education Course (VET). VET courses enable students to study courses which are relevant to industry needs and have clear links to post-school destinations. These courses allow students to gain both HSC qualifications and accreditation with industry and the workplace as part of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

Students at James Fallon High are provided with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills to enable them to commence a career and be an effective employee in the retail industry. Students are provided with the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and knowledge by working in the Retail Coffee Shop, Café J once a week. 

Hospitality has been very successful, with students gaining interesting careers in the hospitality and tourism industries.

Bush Tukka & Cafe J:

Indigenous students at JFHS participate in running a ‘Bush Tukka Cafe’. Students have shared ownership of the Senior Retail Cafe, ‘Cafe J’ where they actively participate in the organisation and running of their Bush Tukka Cafe. An adjacent kitchen allows students to create products for sale. Students gain an understanding of the realities of running a small business and they gain skills and knowledge which equip them for life beyond school.
