As of Monday 24th July 2017, JFHS will be using an SMS and email service to notify you of absences. A message/email will be sent out in relation to unexplained late arrivals mid morning. A messsage/email will also be sent for unexplained whole day absences in the afternoon to remind families to supply an explanation. This can be done via a note or a  phone call to the school on 02 6025 1688. You are also able to reply the the message that you receive.

If your phone number or email address changes please notify the school as soon as possible to avoid information being sent to the incorrect person.

Monitoring and encouraging school attendance is a legal responsibility of both the family and the school. 

If a student is absent for three or more days the parents should contact the school. Please note that under the Education and Public Instruction Act 1987 NSW parents and guardians have a LEGAL responsibility to ensure the regular attendance at school of their children aged between 6 and 17 years. Children within this age group must attend school every day. The Act also specifies that absences must be explained in writing within seven days of the occurrence.

Attendance Policy and Procedures

Under the Education and Public Instruction Act 1987 NSW parents and guardians have a LEGAL responsibility to ensure the regular attendance at school of their children aged between 6 and 17 years. Children within this age group must attend school everyday.  The Act also specifies that abences must be explained in writing within 7 days of the occurrence.

It is expected that all students will attend school as regularly as possible. Attendance rated of below 85% will be followed up by Year Advisers. Year Advisers will aslo contact home after 3 days of unexplained absences. Extended absences for illness or family commitments should be discussed with the Principal.  A note is required explaining each absence.  This is to be bought in to the roll call teacher on the day the student returns. A parent or guardian may explain an absence  to the front office via a phone call or face to face message, but a written explanation still needs to be provided after this to confirm the absence.  This is a legal requirement.  Alternatively a reply to the text message that is sent out each day is sufficient.

Senior Student Absences

The same procedures apply to senior students. However, where an absence immediately precedes or coincides with an Assessment Task, Senior Assessment conditions apply. These conditions are detailed in the Senior Students Assessment Booklet.

It is the school policy to randomly check daily absences to ensure that when students are missing from school it is with their parents’ knowledge and consent.

Arriving Late to School

School begins at 8.58am each day. If students are late arriving to school then they are to sign in at the front office at the sign in window. Here the student will be given a slip to take to class and show their teacher. Late arrivals should be explained by the parent/guardian with a written note or verbally if escorting the student to school. Unexplained late arrivals will receive an SMS message asking for an explanation.

Leaving School Early

Students are required to attend school until 3.30pm (2.52pm on Wednesdaysand 3.10pm on Thursdays (Sports Day)). Students may leave school early for legitimate reasons eg: Doctor Appointment, but they must sign out at the front office and get a slip to excuse them from class BEFORE the end of Recess 1.  Parents may also sign their child out at the front office in person.


All students MUST attend all classes during the day. Students who truant from class will be interviewed by the Deputy Principal and parents will be contacted. 

School Leaving Age and Leaving Procedures

All students must complete Year 10. After Year 10 and until they turn 17, students must be:

  • In School, or registered for home schooling
  • In approved education or training (TAFE, traineeship or apprenticeship)
  • In fulltime, paid employment (average 25 hours /week) or
  • in a combination of work, education and/or training.

If a student is to leave James Fallon High to attend another school or seek employment, he/she must first bring a note from their parent or guardian and complete a Clearance Form obtained from the School Office.


Full School Assemblies are held every Monday and Thursday in the main quadrangle. Students assemble in roll groups based on sport houses.

A Formal Assembly for each year group is held once a semester in the School Hall. At this assembly, student achievement is recognised and certificates are presented. Parents are invited to attend these ceremonies.

Special Graduation Assemblies are held for students in  Year 12 at the conclusion of their courses of study at the end of Term 3.


Assessment & Reporting

AOutstanding Achievement – The student has extensive knowledge and understanding of the content and can readily apply this knowledge. In addition, the student has achieved a very high level of competence in the processes and skills and can apply these skills to new situations.
BHigh Achievement – The student has a thorough knowledge and understanding of the content and a high level of competence in the processes and skills. In addition, the student is able to apply this knowledge and these skills to most situations.
CSound Achievement – The student has sound knowledge and understanding of the main areas of content and has achieved an adequate level of competence in the processes and skills.
DBasic Achievement – The student has a basic knowledge and understanding of the content and has achieved a basic level of competence in the processes and skills.
ELimited Achievement – The student has an elementary knowledge and understanding in a few areas of the content and has achieved a limited competence in some of the processes and skills.

Years 7 to 10

In Years 7 to 10 the students are assessed continually on assignments, class work, unit tests, homework activities and book work. Yearly and half yearly exams are held in some subjects. Special notice is made of the progress of a student in Year 9 and 10. For the award of a ROSA satisfactory progress in both Years 9 and 10 is required. If necessary, parents are informed if a student’s progress is causing concern.

Parent/Teacher evenings are arranged during the year to discuss students’ progress, and to inform students and parents about Board of Studies requirements, changes to curriculum and other important educational issues.


Years 11 & 12

(Refer also to Course Information Booklets for Years 11 & 12 and also Preliminary Course and HSC Assessment Guides).

In Terms One, Two and Three of Year 11 students will study for, and be assessed on, the HSC Preliminary Course. Assessment for the Preliminary Course at James Fallon High School directly reflects the Board of Studies requirements for HSC Assessment. These requirements can be found at the Board of Studies Website – click on the following link – Board of Studies

The school determines which students have satisfactorily met the requirements of the Preliminary Course on the basis of application, attendance and assessment.

Students are counselled and parents advised where students are considered to be at risk. Notification to parents is a Department requirement.

At the end of Term Three the Preliminary Course is examined. Students will receive a report on their performance in the Preliminary Course. It will detail both examination and assessment marks.

Students who have satisfactorily met the requirements of the Preliminary Course may proceed to the HSC Course of study which commences in Term Four of year 11. On commencing the Higher School Certificate Course in Term Four, students will be provided with an assessment policy and timetable which has been prepared to meet the requirements for the award of a Higher School Certificate.

In Year 12, the Trial Higher School Certificate Exam will commence in Week 10 of Term Two.

Reports will be issued early in term two and after the Trial HSC examination.

Regular staff comment is sought on the progress of students at risk. These students are counselled, and advised appropriately, by the Principal, Deputy Principals, Faculty Head Teacher and the Student Adviser.

James Fallon High School Assessment Policy

This document sets out the Assessment Policy of James Fallon High School. It provides a concise and consistent framework from which all students from Years 7-12, and their parents, can draw confidence. We will endeavour, where practical, to assist students who are experiencing difficulty but will apply this policy in a consistent manner across the school to ensure equity for every student.

Assessment at JFHS is conducted in a formal and informal way.

Informal assessment takes place on a daily basis in every lesson across the school.

For the purposes of reporting, both formal and informal assessment are taken into consideration.

This policy applies to formal assessment tasks only.

Notification of assessment tasks

  • Staff will provide students with two weeks’ notice of formal assessment tasks in Years 10, 11 and 12 including for any formal examination, outlining what is in the examination.
  • The class teacher will provide electronic notification of the task where possible, in addition to distributing hard copies of the notification in class.
  • Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 must sign their name on a dedicated sheet or class roll when they receive notification for a submitted assessment task.
  • If a student is absent on the day an assessment task is handed out, it is their responsibility to ensure that they see the class teacher, or the relevant Head Teacher on the day of their return to get their copy of the task.
  • Student absence on the day a task is handed out is ordinarily NOT grounds for an extension.

Submission of assessment tasks

  • When submitting an assessment task, students must also complete an assessment cover sheet. These may also be found on the school website.
  • Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 must sign their name on a dedicated sheet or class roll when they submit an assessment task.
  • If a class teacher is absent on the day of submission the Head Teacher, or Head Teacher nominee, will facilitate the above process.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to submit the assessment task and any appropriate documentation to the Head Teacher on the first day they return to school even if they do not have a timetabled lesson for that class on that day.
  • Where the day for an assessment has to change from its published date, students will be given written notification outlining these changes.

Rule for attendance on the due date of an assessment task

  • Students must attend all timetabled lessons the day before AND on the day an assessment is due.
  • Failure to do so will result in the application of the penalties for late submission as set out in Point 6 of this document.
  • Students will NOT be permitted to work on, or prepare assessments during other classes.

Rule for extensions, illness/misadventure for assessment tasks and examinations

Years 7-10:

  • All applications for an extension MUST be submitted in writing, with appropriate documentation supporting the application, to the Head Teacher, where possible at least two days prior to the due date.
    • Students in Stage 4 (Years 7-8) and Stage 5 (Years 9-10 RoSA) need to provide appropriate supporting documentation in applying for extensions.
    • Appropriate supporting documentation for Stages 4 and 5 includes:
      • medical certificate and
      • parent letter/communication outlining exceptional circumstances.
    • Technology problems will NOT be considered a legitimate reason for late submission and therefore any such application will be declined.

Years 11-12

  • All applications for an extension or variation MUST be made at the earliest possible opportunity by:
  • completing the school’s Variation from Assessment form
  • providing appropriate supporting documentation during an interview with the Deputy Principal responsible for curriculum.
    • Appropriate supporting documentation for Stage 6 includes:

      **  medical certificate and

      **  parent letter/communication outlining exceptional circumstances 

  1. Technology problems will NOT be considered a legitimate reason for late submission and therefore any such application will be declined.
  2. Where practical, students who are organising work experience or work placement must endeavour to avoid clashes with published assessment and examination dates

Nature or form of the extension

For students in Years 7-10 the Head Teacher of the relevant subject will determine which of the following will be granted:

  • An extension of time for submission
  • Completion of an alternate task submitted at a later date
  • An estimate (if authorised by the Deputy Principal responsible for curriculum) based upon the student’s relative achievement in the course
  • Zero mark awarded

For students in Years 11-12, the Deputy Principal responsible for the school’s curriculum will determine which of the following will be granted:

  • An extension of time for submission
  • An estimate (if authorised by the Deputy Principal responsible for curriculum) based upon the student’s relative achievement in the course
  • Zero mark awarded

NOTE: Once notified of the decision, students have the option to appeal the decision as per point 9 in this document.

Acceptable grounds for an extension must be exceptional and may include:

  • School-related, curriculum-based compulsory activity
  • Illness or injury where the nature and duration of the injury or illness directly inhibits the student’s capacity to fulfil the task’s requirements
  • Family bereavement

NOTE: Examination periods and formal assessments are published on Sentral, through the newsletter and other school communication platforms, as well as in the assessment booklets handed out to Years 11 & 12. As a result of this advanced notification, family holidays are extremely strongly discouraged during these periods given that extensions are not granted for this situation.

Circumstances not recognised as exceptional and so not constituting grounds for an extension include:

  • Extra-curricular activities
  • Paid employment commitments
  • Attending/preparations to attend recreational activities such as music concerts, live shows and the Albury Gold Cup
  • Family holidays
  • One or two days of illness during the fortnight leading up to the assessment task due date

Penalties for late submission


Years 7-9:

 Years 10-12:

There is no sliding scale of penalties for students in these years – Year 10, Year 11 and Year 12.

The following policy and procedure will be followed for assessment tasks for students in Years 10-12:

  • Zero marks if not submitted by the specified time on the due date or, for non-attempted tasks, not completed during the timetabled lesson.
  • Students in Year 12 and Year 11 should refer to the detailed assessment policy and procedures set out in the front of their assessment booklets for further information. 

Assessment Appeals

  • Students are encouraged to make initial contact with the class teacher if they have concerns about the way their assessment has been dealt with in a particular course.
  • If the matter remains unresolved the student is to contact the Head Teacher responsible for the course in question.
  • If the matter continues to remain unresolved, students have the option to lodge an appeal in writing that will be addressed and ruled upon by an Assessment Appeals Panel made up of one of either the Principal or a Deputy Principal (who will act as chairperson) and two Head Teachers from faculties other than that which is involved in the appeal.
  • The ruling of the Assessment Appeals Panel will be binding and final.


  • Plagiarism is when you pretend that you have written, created or developed a piece of work that someone else originated. It is cheating and considered malpractice.
  • Detected malpractice will result in the following penalty:
    • Zero marks for part or all of the assessment tainted by the malpractice
    • Year 12 students having their names recorded on the NESA Malpractice Register

Parent/Teacher Evenings

Parent/Teacher evenings are held in Term Two and early Term Three each year. An online booking system has been implemented since 2013 to ensure the most effective use of parent and teacher time. Parents are actively encouraged to make appointments with each of their child’s teachers. The School Online Booking System (SOBS) can be accessed here.

Parents have an open invitation to discuss placement, progress, careers, adjustment problems, etc. with relevant staff members without waiting for the parent/teacher evening.

The Principal and the Deputy Principals are always pleased to see parents while the Careers Adviser, School Counsellor, Student Advisers, Head Teachers and the Student Adviser (Girls) are ready to advise and assist in their own areas of responsibility.

To avoid unnecessary waiting, it is generally advisable for parents to make an appointment when they wish to see members of staff, so that class times can be avoided.

  • We operate on a two week cyclic timetable. The timetables for alternate weeks A & B are different. The required hours for each subject are spread over the two week period.
  • The DEAR Scheme (Drop Everything And Read) operates each day from 9.00am – 9.20am. Students are required to bring books, magazines or other suitable reading material. It is a period of silent reading only, designed to develop literacy skills and a positive educational focus for the day. Rolls are marked at the beginning of each DEAR session.
  • At the start of Term 1, Week 1 will use A Week timetable and Week 2 will use B week timetable.  This will continue to alternate throughout the year.


For safety reasons, bicycles are not to be ridden in the school grounds. Students are to dismount at the front gate and wheel their bike to the bike enclosure where they are left until classes are over. The bike enclosure is locked during lesson time. However for security reasons, students should ensure that bikes are securely locked.

In special circumstances, students may borrow the bike enclosure key from the front office.

In the afternoon, bikes must be walked from the school grounds. With buses, cars and a large number of people moving, safety is paramount.

Breakfast Club

JFHS Staff and the Prefect body work together to run a breakfast club each morning. Students are welcome to come and feast on a healthy range of foods before school to prepare them for the day. Students have the choice of foods such as cereal, yoghurt, toast/toasted sandwiches, muffins, fruit, muesli bars, milk and juice. Students are encouraged to make themselves lunch or take a snack for morning tea.  Breakfast club also allows students to sit and interact with their peers, teachers and the School Leadership group. 

Breakfast Club runs in the Food Technology room from 8.15am – 8.45am Monday to Friday.

Carpark & Road Safety

Use of the School Carpark

A very important reminder to all parents who drive their children to James Fallon High or pick them up after school.

We have established separate entrances for all pedestrians, and this especially applies to students to ensure their safety arriving and leaving school each day. Unfortunately some parents are putting their own children at risk by dropping them off in car movement areas.

The main carpark and driveways are used each morning and afternoon by delivery and service vehicles, special taxis transporting our special needs students, school visitors, disabled students, cyclists and staff vehicles. Stopping a car and picking up or dropping a child off in the school driveway or carpark areas is very dangerous for the child during school opening and closing times, and may also cause a car accident for which your car insurance may not cover you.

We have requested many times that children are not dropped off or picked up in the car park or on driveways at the start or end of school. Once again we request, for the safety of our students and your own children, all parents to use the parking and crossing areas in Fallon and Glenly Streets, and not to enter the school carpark/driveways to drop off or pick up students unless there are special health circumstances requiring this.

School Zone Road Safety

A reminder to parents that there are significant fines and loss of demerit points for all driving offences occurring in school zones. We are committed to providing a safe environment for all our students and visitors, so please observe the 40km/h speed limit during school hours and stop in designated drop off areas only.

Each state school in NSW has access to School Counsellors who are registered psychologists and experienced teachers.

Madelaine Northey and Evie Bradley are the current counsellors at James Fallon High. 

The broad focus areas for school counsellors are:

  • individual counselling – confidential support for students managing difficulties
  • whole school/ student welfare initiatives
  • assessment – learning and mental health
  • liaison with other agencies – collaborative information gathering
  • supporting parents and teachers to understand students’ emotional difficulties and learning needs.

Students are referred to the counsellors by various avenues:

  • self referrals
  • parents
  • staff members
  • welfare committee
  • fellow students.

Student Support Officer (SSO)

The role of the SSO at JFHS is to promote healthy living and the wellbeing for the students in our school. Our SSO in 2017 is Angela Hahn.

The SSO supports students in a wide range of ways such as:

  • Coaching student’s to build positive and respectful relationships.
  • Encouraging the safe and responsible use of phones and social networks.
  • Implementing strategies to allow students to improve self-esteem and motivation.
  • Helping Primary students and those returning to school have a smooth transition. Working with students and their families to promote positive and effective relationships.
  • Initiating a mentor program for our students. This may include mentoring practices such as participation in ‘a day in the life of a university student’ or perhaps being a tradesman for the day. Liaising with agencies in the area to gain insight into issues that may affect today’s young people.
  • Sharing with students carious stress reduction techniques.
  • Promoting conflict resolution strategies through ways such as peer mediation.
  • Providing pre-exam study and organisation methods.
  • Working with various employment agencies within the area as well as supporting our Careers Advisor, Mr Hamish Taylor, to enhance the transition from High School to the workforce or Tertiary Studies.

Out of Home Care Support

There are a number of students in our school that are under statutory care. These students have an educational plan and are monitored in school by the LST with the support of our Out Of Home care Co-Ordinator, Jo Brew.

Safe Schools Coalition

Safe Schools Coalition Australia is a national coalition of organisations and schools working together to create safe and inclusive school environments for same sex attracted, intersex and gender diverse students, staff and families. It is funded by the Australian Government.

In 2015, James Fallon High School became a Safe School.

Students living 2.0 km or more from the James Fallon High School may apply for a bus pass.

Bus Code of Conduct

Students will:

  • Behave safely at all times
  • Respect the needs and comfort of other passengers
  • Respect bus property by not marking or damaging it
  • Always follow instructions about safety on the bus
  • Show their bus pass or ticket to the driver on boarding and when requested

Students will not:

  • Distract the driver except in an emergency
  • Smoke, eat or drink on the bus
  • Allow any part of their body to protrude from the bus
  • Fight, spit, use offensive language or place their feet on the seats
  • Throw any article inside, or out of, the bus
  • Alter, deface, misuse or fraudulently obtain a bus pass
  • Give, lend or transfer their bus pass to another student.

If students break any of these rules, their travel pass may be suspended.

Bus proprietors have the right to suspend students from bus travel, following notification to parents.

  • No students are to get off their bus down the street.
  • Bus travellers will catch their bus from the Fallon Street entrance to the school where staff supervision is provided.
  • Students arriving at school by bus are required to come directly onto the school grounds.
  • At the end of the school day, students are required to remain in the school grounds under supervision until their bus arrives.

Travel Concession Passes

Students over 16 years of age may obtain a travel concession pass from the school office. This entitles students to cheaper fares on public transport.

Discounts on Airfares are obtained by collecting a form from a Travel Agent and getting it signed by the Principal on each occasion that a ticket is purchased.


A Canteen, operated by the P & C Association, is conducted at the school each day at recess and lunch.

Students who wish to be served at the canteen must form orderly queues in year groupings. Having selected their purchases students move to pay at the checkout. Only one student may be at the checkout at any time.

The Canteen opens during Recess 1 and Lunchtime each day. The Canteen is closed to students before school except when special hot drinks are available on some winter’s mornings.

All parents and friends are invited to help at the Canteen – there is always a shortage of helpers. If available, please ring 60252077 and ask for Meralda Crocker, the Canteen Manager.

UNIFORMS: The canteen provides students the opportunity to purchase second-hand clothing. If you have old spray jackets, or jumpers your children have grown out of, please drop them in.

If any parents have a few hours to spare, we would appreciate an extra pair of hands. Merelda looks forward to meeting you all.


In years 7 and 8, all students study computing as part of their mandatory Technology course. The school also offers elective courses in Computing Studies in Years 9 – 12.

The school has a number of fully equipped computer rooms with fully networked computers. Computers are also available in the library for internet research or for completing assignment work. In addition, rooms are progressively being set up across the school with interactive whiteboards.

Breaches of the school and Department of Education policies can result in students network accounts being disabled for a period of time.


Extra-Curricular Activities

The school provides students with carious opportunities to participate extra-curricular activities.

Bush Tukka and Cafe J

Aboriginal students at JFHS participate in running a ‘Bush Tukka Cafe’. Students have shared ownership of the Senior Retail Cafe, ‘Cafe J’, where they actively participate in the organisation and running of their Bush Tukka Cafe.  An adjacent kitchen allows students to create products for sale. Students gain an understanding of the realities of running a small business and they gain skills and knowledge which equip them for life beyond school. 

Debating and Public Speaking

James Fallon High School has had a high level of success in areas of debating and Public Speaking.  Students in Years 7 & 8 enter the Premier’s Debating Contest, a statewide debating contest. Students in Year 9 take part in the Riverina Debating Festival held each December in Albury. Year 10 students participate in the Premier’s Debating Contest and Year 11 students take part in the Premier’s Senior Debation contest.

Our students take part in the Sydney Morning Herald Public Speaking Contest for senior students and Year 10 students, as well as service club speaking contests within the region. The Lions youth of the Year contest is a prestigious competition in which our students have had outstanding success, with students wimming the club and regional divisions on many occasions over the past few years.

Performing Arts

Performing Arts at James Fallon includes the Rock Eisteddfod, the biannual Musical, opportunities to attend the Riverina and State Dance and Drama festivals, and participation in local and regional events.

We also enter the Biting Dog Theatre Festival which is run by Hothouse Theatre on the Lincoln Causeway between Albury and Wodonga. This is a schools’ festival where students get assistance to perform on a professional stage with industry professionals to help. Traineeships are also available for Stage Managing, Lighting, Sound and Media Promotion.


The aim of Wakakirri is to teach students about themselves and others through creating and sharing stories and by this process develop students’ educational outcomes, lifestyle choices and community awareness.

Wakakirri is a very significant part of the Creative and Performing Arts at JFHS. Around 150 students and teachers work during sport for three terms to prepare for the dance/drama performance.

Duke Of Edinburgh

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a challenging and rewarding program for young people aged between 14 and 25.There are 5 million participants in over 100 countries around the world.

The basic idea of the Award is individual challenge. As everyone is different, so too are the challenges that young people undertake to achieve the Award. There are three levels – Bronze, Silver and Gold. Each of these levels has four sections – Skills, Service, Physical Recreation and Adventurous Journey.

At James Fallon High School the Journey section is undertaken in the form of a canoe trip. We usually run two 3-day trips each year – one on the upper Murray in Term 1, and a second, downstream from Albury in Term 4.

The other sections of the Award are undertaken in the participant’s own time. Activities commonly undertaken include 

  • volunteer work in the care of animals,
  • assisting charity organizations,
  • participation in a wide range of sports,
  • Student Representative Council,
  • peer tutoring in reading,
  • coaching sporting teams,
  • umpiring,
  • music,
  • art,
  • photography,
  • woodwork


Learning Support

There is a range of support provided for students of JFHS to achieve optimal educational outcomes.  Our school uses learning programs and specialised staff where needed and we work in partnership with parents and carers to assist students who have special needs.

We have Learning and Support Teachers (LaST), Student Learning Support Officers (SLSO) and an EAL/D teacher. This team of professionals provide students and staff specialised support to enhance the learning opportunities of all students. We monitor each students’ progress and provide additional learning support as required. Individual Learning/Educational Plans are developed to cater specifically for individual needs and goals within the school setting.

All Year 7 students are screened for reading difficulties using the Torch Test. Students who are identified as having reading difficulties are included in the Year 7/11 Peer Tutoring program which runs during DEAR time (Drop Everything and Read) four days per week.

Students have individual, trained Year 11 tutors who meet regularly with the STLA and the Literacy Support Team coordinator for consultation and monitoring of progress.

The Literacy Support Team seeks and utilises parent support in assisting with student reading programs.

Parents are welcome to contact the LaST if they have any concerns regarding their children’s learning and progress, or can assist with the volunteer tutoring scheme.

Our school is committed to working with Aboriginal parents and community members  in developing personalised plans for our Aboriginal students. JFHS also has a Learning Centre room centralising services, providing learning resources for staff and students and enabling a wider range of student needs to be addressed.

Learning Support Staff

As part of the LST, there are a variety of support staff to assist student learning needs across the school:

  • Learning and Support Teachers (LaST)
  • Student Learning Support Officers
  • Indigenous Support – Aboriginal Student Support Officers
  • English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EAL/D) Support
  • Hearing Support Teacher


It is School policy that students receive regular homework. Faculties will communicate their special requirements to parents and students.

All students should have with them at each class a HOMEWORK DIARY. In this should be recorded the homework given.

All students should also develop regular study habits so that work is revised regularly. This becomes even more important in the senior years.


Great importance is placed on personal organisation and homework. The P&C has agreed to provide a homework diary to be distributed to all students in years 7 – 12. Students are encouraged to use this diary to assist them to organise homework, study and other commitments. Parents are requested to support students with this personal organisation.

It is an expectation that students use their diary. Classroom teachers will ask all students to take out their diaries when important information needs to be recorded. The diary is a line of communication between school and home, especially for Year 7. We strongly encourage parents to regularly check the diary, sign it at the end of the school week, as one way of keeping in touch with their child’s learning commitments.

Mobile Phones & Electronic Devices

Mobile phones, tablets and other personal communication devices are in common usage in our society. Mobile computing, by which we mean the use of network capable devices that students are already carrying, has become an indispensable part of day to day life. In order to manage the use of these devices the James Fallon High School Technology policy is as follows.

Following some recent incidents in lessons, it is timely to revisit our school’s policy in relation to the use of mobile phones and other personal electronic devices.  Please note that the policy has been developed and implemented so that students in classes are focused on the learning in their classes.

Here is a summary of the policy’s key points and the ways the policy is implemented:

  1. Teachers expect that all mobile phones and personal electronic devices are turned off and remain in school bags during lessons.
  2. The only time students should have their mobile phones or other devices switched on and visible in class is when the teacher has informed the class that phones are required as a learning tool in the particular lesson.
  3. Personal calls, responding to calls, sending and receiving text messages/social media posts are not permitted during lessons and classes.
  4. If students use their phones or other devices inappropriately at any time at school and do not comply when asked to use them appropriately or put them away when requested, teachers may confiscate a student’s phone or other electronic device.  Please note that this aspect of the policy is in place for every NSW Public School.
  5. The school has a telephone system with multiple lines. If there is an urgent situation or change in arrangements in relation to a child, we expect that parents and carers will ring the school and advise the school of the need for their child to be informed of that situation.
  6. If a student believes an urgent situation has arisen at school which requires immediate contact with the student’s parent/carer, the student should immediately notify a teacher.
  7. Students may use their phone or other device, including ear buds/earphones, before school, during recess and lunch breaks or after school as long as face to face communication with a member of staff is not required during these times.
  8. Students are at all times responsible for the safekeeping and security of their personal electronic devices if they choose to bring them to school.


Leaving School Grounds

Any student who wishes to leave the grounds during the day must bring a signed and dated note from their parents to the Front Office before school. This note should also indicate when the student is expected to return to school.
On sports days, these special requests are dealt with by the Sports Organisers.
No lunch passes are issued to leave the school grounds during lunchtime.


Lockers are available for use by senior students. Any senior student who would like to obtain a locker should see the person in charge of the Photocopy/Duplicating Room. The student must keep the locker clean and abide by the conditions of use. A hiring fee is charged to cover the cost of maintenance and replacement of lockers.

Lost Property

  • Lost property can be claimed by making enquiries at the Transition Unit.
  • To minimise loss, all items of clothing should be labelled.
  • Students are advised not to bring valuables to school or to leave valuables or money in their bags.
  • Parents are requested to purchase uniform items with pockets large enough for purses or wallets.
  • If larger amounts of money have to be brought to school, students should hand it to a teacher or the school office for safe-keeping.

Prescribed Medicine

  • Should a student require oral medication during the day, one day’s supply must be brought in and left with the School Assistants, Mrs Bell-Chambers or Mrs Staff, who are in charge of the School Clinic.
  • The medication must be in its original container or packaging, the forms will be supplied by the office staff for completion before medication will be accepted.
  • Please give your child clear instructions to report to the School Office at the correct time.
  • Clear, written instructions should also be forwarded to ensure correct dosages etc.
  • In cases of chronic illness which requires regular or intermittent medication, please contact the Principal to discuss suitable arrangements.


A feature of the public education system in NSW is the opportunity to provide time in class for education in ethics, faith and morality from a religious or non-religious perspective at the choice of parents. 

A parent/carer may at any time notify the school in writing that they wish to change their decision. Students will continue the same arrangement as the previous year, unless a parent/carer has requested a change in writing.

Students not attending SRE are given supervised alternative meaningful activities.

OPTION 2 : You do not wish your child to attend SRE. Your child will participate in alternative meaningful activities.


Student Medical and Contact Information

At the commencement of a new year, students are issued blank information cards that parents/guardians are required to fill out. The information required on these cards includes:

  • Full student name, year, roll class and date of birth
  • Address
  • Parent contact information
  • Emergency Contacts
  • Medical Conditions
  • Signatures to give the school permission to : 
    • Call an Ambulance if required for your child
    • Call a doctor if needed
    • Allow your child to participate in all school carnivals and weekly sport
    • Allow child to travel to sporting venues
    • Allow child to participate in swimming programs
    • Use photographs of your child for the media, facebook, T.V.  and DEC related promotions.

School Hours

Arrival at School

School commences at 8.58am with roll call. Having arrived at school students are required to remain on the school grounds. Students arriving by bus are expected to go directly into the school grounds.

If a student is late, a late note should be obtained from the school office. A list of latecomers is kept and students who are late without adequate explanation are referred to the Deputy Principal.

After School

Students are supervised as they leave the school at the end of the school day. Students should NOT be at school after this time, unless engaged in specific activities under staff supervision.

Parents who collect students are requested to do so promptly at 3.30pm. For safety and supervision reasons parents are requested NOT to pick up students in Fallon Street.


Welcome to James Fallon High School’s sport program. Our sport day is Thursday afternoon from 1.10-3.10pm and our aim is to maximise participation in a fun and safe environment.

During sport days there are guidelines which all students must abide by:

  • it is compulsory for all students to wear school sports shorts and a yellow polo shirt (school sports shorts can be purchased from the front office for $20).
  • if you are out of uniform you will be dealt through the JFHS Uniform Policy.
  • all students must participate with fairness, respect and responsibility for their own actions.
  • students who misbehave will be dealt through the JFHS Welfare Policy. Repeat offenders will lose the privilege of making their selection of sport for the following term.
  • If a student is injured and unable to participate in sport, they must bring a parental note to the PDHPE staffroom before roll call. These students will attend non-sport and will be required to complete a written sport package


Year 7 Sport

Term 1 Water Awareness Program

When: Thursdays –


Meet: Students will meet in the school quadrangle at the beginning of sport

Cost: $3.00 pool entry (or seasons ticket) + $4.00 bus travel (correct money needed)

Bring: swimmers, towel, sunscreen, goggles (if needed)

Program: Catering for all abilities, this program consists of water safety information, swim instruction and water familiarisation skills. In the final week (Thursday 6th April) students will attend Albury Swim Centre where they will participate in a fun swim session including the use of the waterslide; therefore the final cost for swimming that week will be $9.00 TBC.

Terms 2-4

All year 7 students will experience a variety of timetabled sports upon which they can build their basic skills and in term 4 they will be given the option of selecting a sport of their choice from the whole school sport selection process (see options below).

Sports Choices

 At the end of each term students will have the opportunity to select a sport for the coming term. Choices will occur in descending year group order (i.e.- year 12, then 11, 10, 9 and 8) and sport options will vary term by term.

In term 4 of Year 11 (as students begin their HSC courses), Year 11 students have the option of choosing Senior Study during sport and utilise the expertise of senior teachers and resources in the school library. Students must be consistent attenders of school sport all year in order to access this option.

Before selecting a sport it is extremely important that students are aware of the total weekly cost of participating and that they are able to commit to this weekly payment. For bus travel it is essential that students have the exact change of $4.00 to ensure a quick departure time.

The sports listed below will not run every term, but are simply an indication as to some of the options available (prices may vary as to what is listed below).

Roll Marking for Sport

In order to allow a more efficient process of tracking student movement, roll marking during sport afternoons occur as follows:

  • all sports will be allocated a room for the term which will be advertised on the sports noticeboard (situated in the quadrangle).
  • students will attend their allocated room promptly when the bell rings at 1.10pm where their attendance will be marked electronically on the roll.
  • at the end of sport, students will return to their allocated room for roll marking and will remain there under the supervision of their sport teacher/s until the 3.10pm bell rings when they will be dismissed.

Sports Carnivals

Throughout terms 1 & 2 students will participate in whole school sporting carnivals in swimming, athletics and cross country. Dates and venues are attached and specific information will come home regarding these carnivals as needed. Students must attend these carnivals and participate to the best of their ability to gain points for their house (Cook – yellow, Bass – blue, Flinders – green or Tasman – red).

Sporting Teams

Throughout the year students will have the opportunity to trial for school sporting teams. These trials will be advertised via the daily notices during roll call in the morning. All students with a particular interest in a sport are encouraged to trial.

Throughout the year highly skilled students have the opportunity to trial for Riverina sporting teams. These nominations will be advertised via the daily notices during roll call in the morning as well as displayed on the sports noticeboard in the quadrangle. Similarly Riverina trial dates can be accessed via the Riverina Sports website www.sports.det.nsw.edu.au/riverina (however nominations must still be through the Sports Coordinators in the Sports Department at school. Students cannot attend a trial day without the official forms signed by the Sports Coordinators).

The WASP Cup (Weekly Award for Sport Participation)

To continue to encourage and recognise the participation of all students at sport, a new feature of our sporting program was introduced in 2015. This is both an individual recognition for effort as well as contributing to the tally of your House points for the ownership of the annual WASP Cup.

The procedure involves:

  • Each week your Thursday sport teacher has the opportunity to hand out WASPs (weekly award for sport participation).
  • Students then place their award into the WASP box outside the PDHPE staffroom.
  • Each award will attract 1 point for your House towards the end of year WASP Cup.
  • If you gain three WASPs you will receive a Sports Award from the Sports Department.
  • In week 8, all awards in the WASP box will go into a draw. The individual who wins will have the cost of their sport bus for the following term paid for. (WASP winners at sport in weeks 9 & 10 will go into the following term’s draw).
  • The House who builds the most points by a designated date towards the end of Term 4 will be announced as the winners of THE WASP CUP at our annual presentation night.


James Fallon has a House Competition at the Swimming, Diving, Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals. All students are required to attend and participate in these Carnivals. They are enjoyable days and build on school spirit.

From these four carnivals teams are selected in each sport to progress on to the Zone and then the Riverina Carnival. A number of our athletes have also then progressed to the State Carnivals held in Sydney.

 James Fallon High School has had the opportunity to engage in carious experiences and partnerships that have involved local Universities and organisations.

Professional Experience (PEX) Hub

JFHS  has been given the amazing opportunity to engage in a partnership with Charles Sturt University to become a PEX Hub school. 

The Professional Experience Agreement between the NSW Department of Education and Charles Sturt University identifies James Fallon High as a “hub” school, the only high school in a rural area to be so identified, with an exclusive relationship with Charles Sturt University in the field of professional experience.

The aim of the program is to identify innovative practices that can be employed in teacher education professional experience programs, to address issues of professional development for teachers on staff who are re-training, and to provide insight into sustainable effective professional experience in a rural high school.


La Trobe University

Liasing with La Trobe University and its campuses through student participation in ongoing workshops highlighted the higher education opportunities for our students in the Albury area as well as providing them with a tertiary experience. The students have been provided with skills and time to reflect on their aspirations and their exit plans from school, whilst considering how school education can support them in those plans. In 2018, 36 Year 12 students have been provided a conditional offer to LA Trobe, with mentoring and transition support to university. The program is not just being offered to students looking to continue to university but also students to improve their choices and academic futures.

MICEEP Crew (Capable and Ready to Work) Program

A partnership between the three high schools, including JFHS, and MICEEP has been developed to deliver engagement under the Links to Learning Funding Agreement. This involved 12 students from each high school to engage in a program called Capable and Ready for Work.
